The pixel-art turn-based RPG Forge of the Fae has taken Kickstarter by storm, exceeding its funding goal in just one day and attracting a growing number of backers as its campaign unfolds. Developed by Datadyne, this story-driven indie game draws inspiration from ancient Celtic folklore, providing a fresh take on a beloved genre.
In September, Datadyne unveiled an official trailer for Forge of the Fae, announcing the launch of its Kickstarter campaign at the end of the month. Players will embark on a journey where they harness the power of crystals to wield formidable magic, face off against perilous Fae, and make decisions that significantly impact the storyline. The development team promises a rich narrative filled with unexpected twists and intricacies.
Pixel-art RPGs have a dedicated following, with classics like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger often cited as benchmarks for visual style. The announcement of Forge of the Fae has resonated strongly with the community, evidenced by the overwhelming support for Datadyne's Kickstarter campaign.
After launching the campaign on September 24, Datadyne reached its funding goal of $15,000 in just seven hours. In a celebratory update, the team revealed they had been self-funding the game since its inception, and the Kickstarter funds will be allocated to enhance key features and further the development process.
Support for this unique indie RPG has surged, with the campaign raising over $112,000 at the time of writing. The Kickstarter is set to run until October 24, 2024, so this figure is expected to grow.
The rapid funding success has unlocked several Stretch Goals, including a Japanese translation, a fishing mini-game, and teleportation stones to streamline navigation across the game’s map.
Moreover, the developer announced that acclaimed musician Emi Evans, known for her remarkable soundtracks in Nier: Automata, Dark Souls, and Drakengard 3, will contribute to the game's music.
Pledge levels start at $25, granting backers access to the Metalworker tier, which includes a digital copy of the game, a digital art book, and exclusive HD wallpapers for both mobile and PC. The highest tier, the Destroyer tier, priced at $4,444, offers an array of exclusive perks such as a unique credit in the game, access to a private developer Discord channel, and the opportunity to design a specific Fae character.
While the exact release date for Forge of the Fae has not been announced, the team is aiming for a 2026 launch on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC.
