Players of Disney Dreamlight Valley have recently been taken aback by some unsettling gift requests from Pumbaa. As Halloween approaches, albeit later than many fans had hoped, the warthog’s odd demands have sparked speculation about some hidden, dark tendencies lurking within his cheerful demeanor.
On October 9, Disney Dreamlight Valley introduced its massive Jungle Getaway update, bringing in Timon and Pumbaa to the game. The duo now joins their fellow The Lion King characters, including Simba, Nala, and Scar, in the ever-growing list of characters that players can invite to live in their virtual villages.
Alongside their arrival, the Jungle Getaway update also rolled out a rock music-themed Star Path and a handful of quality-of-life improvements. But for many fans, the highlight was finally seeing the beloved duo from the classic 1994 animated film step into the spotlight, as players had been eagerly awaiting their inclusion in the game for over a year.
However, the joyful vibe of "Hakuna Matata" quickly turned into a moment of shock for some players when they encountered a peculiar Favorite Things of the Day request from Pumbaa. His choice of gift raised eyebrows and hinted at a potential case of cannibalism—something that didn't sit quite right with players. The mechanic of giving gifts is one of the quickest ways to build friendships in Disney Dreamlight Valley, and each character’s desired items change daily.
A number of players on Reddit were quick to point out that Pumbaa's gift request included Pulled Pork—a cooked dish made from the very species he is related to. For a character that is so lovable and jolly, this unsettling request seemed to suggest a darker side to the iconic warthog’s personality.
While it might be true that warthogs are omnivores and occasionally consume animal carcasses, they aren’t known to hunt or actively seek out meat. In the wild, they usually resort to eating carrion only during extreme conditions like droughts when food is scarce. Typically, their diet consists primarily of plants, which they dig up with their tusks.
Much like his portrayal in the Disney films, real-life warthogs do enjoy munching on insects and worms—slimy yet satisfying snacks. The idea of cooking and devouring his own relatives, however, is a behavior that’s definitely out of character for Pumbaa.
While the creepy implications of Pumbaa’s request were likely unintentional on the developers' part, it seems to tie in oddly well with the spooky vibes of the season. Some players felt let down that the Jungle Getaway update didn’t bring any specific Halloween-themed content to the game.
Despite the lack of Halloween festivities in the recent update, Disney Dreamlight Valley is set to host its annual Halloween celebrations later this year. The third annual Trick-or-Treat event is slated to begin on October 23, bringing spooky fun back to the valley.
Fans are looking forward to diving into the Halloween event while trying to forget the peculiar request from Pumbaa, hoping that future updates will bring more fitting content to this enchanting game world.
