Blizzard Entertainment has announced significant updates to Competitive Play and matchmaking in the upcoming Season 13 of Overwatch 2. While this new season won't introduce a new hero, players can expect a variety of multiplayer updates, the return of the beloved Halloween Terror event, and much more.
As Season 12 comes to a close, Blizzard has confirmed that Overwatch 2 Season 13, titled "Spellbinder," is set to launch on Tuesday, October 15. True to form, the new season will introduce a fresh Battle Pass, exciting game modes, and special events, including a much-anticipated crossover with the popular anime series My Hero Academia.
Upon the season's release, players will dive right into the Halloween Terror event, running until Monday, November 4. Alongside these seasonal festivities, Overwatch 2 will receive several enhancements and tweaks to its existing game modes to ensure a more refined gaming experience.
Blizzard is introducing a series of changes to Competitive Play matchmaking in Season 13, designed to improve the experience for players teaming up with friends. Matchmaking adjustments are aimed at reducing queue times, and the game's Role Delta technology has been upgraded to better match Tank players against others of similar skill. This enhancement aims to create a fairer playing field for those stepping into the Tank role during Competitive matches.
- Matchmaking has been fine-tuned to offer shorter queue times.
- Upgraded Role Delta tech now ensures Tank players are paired more closely in skill level.
- Higher-ranked matches will consider grouping to create more balanced gameplay.
- Modifiers affecting MMR decay have been reduced.
Blizzard's data analysis and player feedback revealed that pre-made groups in Overwatch 2 often had a significant advantage over solo players. To address this, Season 13 will take team compositions into account when building higher-ranked matches. Additionally, adjustments to MMR decay modifiers are aimed at making it harder for new accounts to rapidly climb into the Top 500, all while protecting the rankings of seasoned veterans.
Aspiring Top 500 players will now need to complete the "Seasoned Competitor" lifetime challenge, which requires winning 750 games in Competitive Play. This challenge only needs to be completed once, and once achieved, players will be eligible for the Top 500 leaderboard in any season. Blizzard hopes this change will lower the seasonal threshold for role-specific games to 25 per season, easing the pressure to constantly grind for the leaderboard.
Full patch notes for Overwatch 2 Season 13 will be released on October 15, offering more insight into the Competitive Play and matchmaking changes. Additionally, fans can expect an update on the My Hero Academia collaboration later in the season, adding even more excitement to the latest chapter of the game.
